Vince Clarke had already had international
hits with Yazoo and Depeche Mode, and enjoyed various one-off
projects (The Assembly, Vince Clarke & Paul Quinn, etc.),
when he set about searching for a singer with a touch of
a genious.
Following an ad in the music press and a
brief audition, the classic pop team of Vince Clarke and
Andy Bell was born and christened Erasure. Their first few
singles and the album "Wonderland" nudged the
charts and awakened the public’s interest to the sensual
dance pop that was to become Erasure’s trademark, but it
wasn’t until the release of the single "Sometimes" in
1986, which reached number 2 in the UK charts, that Erasure
entered the major pop league. The following single, "It
Doesn’t Have To Be", paved the way for the release
and success of "The Circus" album and the band’s
firts world tour. When it was followed by "The Two
Rings Circus", a selection of remixes and recordings
from the original "Circus", it was clear Erasure
were really onto something.
Never ones to play things safe, Erasure surprised
their many fans with their next release, the truly wondrous
and glowering ballad "Ship Of The Fools" from
their third album ""The Innocents", which
has now sold over a million copies in the UK alone.
1988 ran its shining course for Erasure,
with a July tour of America taking in all points East and
West.
Released in the autumn of 1989, "Drama!" illustrated
the growing strength of Andy and Vince’s songwriting partnership
and reflects the diversity found on its parent album "Wild!".
The next chapter in the history of the quintessential
English pop eccentrics began in France in 1990, where Vince
and Andy, incorrigible songwriters both, decided to get
back to basics for the recording of their next album, "Chorus".
Mixed in Hamburg, the album, a Number One of course, spawned
the single of the same name, which became a top 5 single.
Having long been fans of ABBA,
it was an inevitable move to pay tribute to the Swedish
four piece by recording four of their favourite ABBA songs. "Abba-esque" was
recorded while Erasure rehearsed for their 1992 World Tour.
Following its outrageous success Erasure could only follow
it with "Pop! – The First 20 Hits" and a video
compilation of the same name.
1994 marked another busy year for Erasure
with the release of the album "I Say, I Say, I Say",
which spawned 3 more hit singles in the UK while, more importantly,
at last giving the duo the European and American chart success
they had to deserved. Erasure released the "Erasure" album
in October 1995 and "Cowboy" in 1997.
In 2000s in spite of several solo-works of
Vincent Clarke (for instance with Martyn Ware) and solo
album of Andy Bell "Electric Blue" several more
albums were followed: "Loveboat" (2000); "Other
People's Songs" (2003); "Nightbird" (2005); "Union
Street" (2006); "Light At The End Of The World" (2007).
