The Gürzenich Orchestra (Gürzenich-Orchester) is one of the major European orchestras located in the ancient German city of Cologne. The origins of the municipal Gürzenich-Orchester date back to the 15th century when it was constituted as a cathedral orchestra.

Not until the end of the 17th century, did the orchestra's activities expand to playing in the opera hall. From 1857 to 1986 the concerts were staged in the Cologne Gürzenich (City Hall, built in 1447), an imposing festival hall, where numerous works have been premiered, including Brahms' Concerto for Violin and Viola in A Minor, op. 102, Richard Strauss's "Till Eulenspiegels merry pranks" and Mahler's 5th Symphony.

The Gürzenich was destroyed by bombing during World War II and rebuilt in 1955. Since 1986 the orchestra has been based in the Kölner Philharmonie (Cologne Philharmonic Hall), a new modern concert hall.

In 1989 the Gürzenich Orchestra participated in recording of Thomas Anders first solo-album "Different".

Since 1991, the General Music Director of the Gürzenich Orchestra has been the American maestro James Conlon. Under his direction, the orchester recorded Alexander Zemlinsky's opera Der Zwerg and won three of the leading international recording prizes.

Здание Gürzenich было разрушено союзниками во время Второй мировой войны и отстроено заново в 1955 г. С 1986 г. оркестр базируется в Кёльнской филармонии (Kölner Philharmonie), новом современном концертном зале.

В 1989 году Gürzenich Orchestra принял участие в записи первого сольного альбома Томаса Андерса "Different".

С 1991 года, художественным руководителем и дирижёром стал американский маэстро James Conlon. Под его руководством оркестр записал оперу Александра Землинского Der Zwerg, за которую завоевал три престижные международные награды.
