The music of Barry Manilow attends Thomas Anders during his entire creative path, and the performing of the American musician’s songs takes a special place in the creative heritage of Anders. While answering a question concerning his musical passions during a press-conference in Mir on 01.09.2007, Thomas Anders stated that

"These who have influenced me most are ABBA and Barry Manilow, the music of 70-s. Barry Manilow was the first performer whose disc from America I was presented with. It gave me an opportunity to give a different glance at music. You’d better make allowance for the fact that at that time we could only have German – or, at best, European music. It was not easy to get to know what’s going on in America – quite different situation than nowadays, in Internet and MTV times, when we can discover in two minutes, who recorded and what album on the edge of the world. Mutual influence occurs very fast. However, at that time, in 70-s that disc became a kind of revelation for me".

In 1987, touring with "Thomas Anders Show", Thomas performed during the concerts Barry Manilow’s songs for the first time, showing an excellent vocal mastering and true understanding of the essence of music, made by an outstanding American performer. Such songs as "One Voice" (performed a capella), "Mandy" and "Could It Be Magic", gained an intensity and a pathetic intimacy. Lately Thomas performed the last two songs on repeated occasions during his concerts, frequently accompanying himself on the piano. Sometimes during the TV-programs Thomas was asked to perform something impromptu; then he often sang a passage from "Mandy". In 2000 this song was included in Fan Club CD.

In 1988 Barry Manilow’s repertoire, performed by Thomas Anders, was enriched by "I Write The Songs", which was included in Love Medley; "Copacabana" and "Hey Mambo", which made up Latin Medley together with Frank Sinatra’s "Brazil". Both medleys were one of the greatest adornments of Thomas Anders’ concert programs.

In 1989 during the work on "Different" Thomas Anders’ manager tried to contact with Barry Manilow concerning the producing of few tracks on the album. However, unfortunately, that collaboration didn’t come about.

The year of 1991 presented to Thomas’ fans a splendid cover-version of the song "Lay Me Down", which was first heard during TV-program "Boulevard Bio" (ARD) on 09.10.1991, and then during the Fan club Party in December of 1991.

In January, 1997 Thomas Anders officially recorded four songs of Barry Manilow for Jazz album. A song called "When October Goes" can be regarded as a true pearl of that album; it gained a philosophic intensity and a perfect sound in Thomas’ performing.

Тяжело было узнать, что происходит в Америке. Не то, что сейчас, в эпоху Интернета и MTV, когда мы можем за две минуты узнать, у кого какой альбом вышел на другом конце света. Очень быстро происходит взаимное влияние. А тогда в 70-е годы та пластинка стала для меня откровением".

В 1987 году, гастролируя с "Томас Андерс Шоу", Томас впервые исполнил на концертах композиции Барри Манилоу, демонстрируя великолепное владение вокалом и подлинное проникновение в суть музыки выдающегося американского певца и композитора. В исполнении Томаса "One Voice", прозвучавшая а капелла, "Mandy" и "Could It Be Magic" приобрели глубину и проникновенную интимность. Впоследствии Томас неоднократно исполнял на концертах две последние композиции, часто под собственный аккомпанемент на рояле. Когда во время телепередач Томаса Андерса просили исполнить что-либо экспромтом, он чаще всего пел отрывок из "Mandy". В 2000 году она вошла в трек-лист Fan Club CD.

During the following years Thomas Anders frequently included Barry Manilow’s songs in his concerts and TV-performing. So, during the Christmas concert in Liebfrauenkirche on 20.12.98 a classical Christmas song "(Because It’s) Christmas For All The Children" was performed, and in a TV-program "Istorii v detalyah" ("Stories in details") on STS channel on February, 2006 a passage from "Looks Like We Made It" was heard. During the concerts in Zweibrucken (30.07.2006) and in Heilbronn (01.06.2007) there were a fiery "Jump, Shout, Boogie" and a romantic "Can’t Smile Without You", which gained a kind of airy lightness in Thomas’ performing.

While preparing for the recording of an album "Songs Forever" Thomas has already stated in 2004 that he was following Barry Manilow’s footsteps. During the Fan club party-2004 Thomas performed a Barry Manilow’s Medley, where were "Mandy", "I Write The Songs", "Can’t Smile Without You" among others.

The Fan club party-2006 (06.01.2007) became a truly precious gift for Thomas’ fans. There were Thomas’ "classic" covers of Manilow, like "I Write The Songs", "Can’t Smile Without You", "Jump, Shout, Boogie", "Mandy", as well as new songs that were never performed before, like "Why Don’t You See The Show Again", "Sweet Life", "Sunday Father", "Looks Like We Made It", "It's Just Another New Year's Eve".

It would be well to note that Thomas and Barry Manilow covered the same world-known hits of other artists in different times (for example, "Memory", "Sometimes When We Touch", "Summer Wind" and others).

В последующие годы Томас Андерс неоднократно включал композиции Барри Манилоу в свои концертные и телевыступления. Так 20.12.98 во время рождественского концерта в Liebfrauenkirche прозвучала классическая рождественская композиция "(Because It’s) Christmas For All The Children", а в передаче "Истории в деталях", показанной на канале СТС в феврале 2006, - отрывок из "Looks Like We Made It". На концертах в Цвайбрюкене (30.07.2006) и Хайльбронне (01.06.2007) Томас пел зажигательную "Jump, Shout, Boogie" и романтическую "Can’t Smile Without You", которой исполнение Томаса придало какую-то почти неземную легкость.

Готовясь к выпуску альбома "Songs Forever", Томас еще в 2004 году утверждал, что движется по стопам Барри Манилоу. На Фан-встрече 2004 года Томас исполнил Barry Manilow’s Medley, куда, среди прочих песен вошли "Mandy", "I Write The Songs", "Can’t Smile Without You".

Но настоящим подарком для поклонников Томаса стала фанклубовская встреча 2006 года (06.01.2007), где прозвучали как ставшие классическими для Томаса перепевки Манилоу ("I Write The Songs", "Can’t Smile Without You", "Jump, Shout, Boogie", "Mandy") так и новые, ранее не исполнявшиеся, композиции, в том числе: "Why Don’t You See The Show Again", "Sweet Life", "Sunday Father", "Looks Like We Made It", "It's Just Another New Year's Eve".

Следует также отметить, что Томас и Барри Манилоу в разное время перепевали одни и те же всемирно известные песни других исполнителей (например, "Memory", "Sometimes When We Touch", "Summer Wind" и др.).
